Quality Disclaimer

The BakenekoGO is a budget keyboard that is made via injection molding. This manufacturing method allows us to keep the price low, but it also has some aesthetic side effects. We're extremely happy with the quality of this keyboard, but we recommend reading the QC disclaimer found at the bottom of this page.

ZMK is an open source firmware built specifically for custom wireless keyboards. It is incredibly power efficient, allowing you to get the most out of your battery. We estimate that with normal use and RGB off, you should be able to get at least a month out of the included battery per charge. Like QMK, ZMK lets you customize your keymap and so much more.

FAQ

Q: Will BakenekoGO be QMK/VIA compatible?
A: BakenekoGO will use ZMK firmware and ZMK Studio when released. These are similar to QMK and VIA, but designed for wireless PCBs. Continue reading for more information on ZMK.

Q: Can I buy the wireless PCB for my aluminum CannonKeys Bakeneko60?
A: Yes! We have tested the new wireless PCB in our original Bakeneko60 case and it works great. We will be selling the PCB and battery on their own with the launch of BakenekoGO.

Q: What colors will be available?
A: Frosted Polycarbonate and Soft Touch Black.

Q: Is there going to be a 65% BakenekoGO?
A: While we don't currently have one planned, we can consider it in the future. However...we do have a new and exciting 65% wireless injection molded keyboard planned for the very near future. Sign up for our newsletter to be the first to learn details on that project!

Q: Will there be ISO support?
A: ISO Support is not currently planned.

Q: What stabilizers work with BakenekoGO?
A: Like other keyboards in the Bakeneko Series, BakenekoGO requires clip-in stabilizers for the included 1.6mm PCB. We include compatible stabilizers.

Q: Does BakenekoGO have any RGB lighting?
A: BakenekoGO has RGB underglow, however due to power draw we recommend only using it when plugged in. Battery life will be significantly shorter with the RGB on.

Q: I want to use X plate, will it work with BakenekoGO?
A: If a plate works with our original Bakeneko60, it will work with BakenekoGO! Due to the wireless capabilities of the GO, we recommend using non-metalic plate materials to keep the signal strength strong.

Q: I want to use an O-ring I have on hand from my Bakeneko60, will it work with BakenekoGO?
A: The O-rings included with BakenekoGO are slightly different than the ones we use for Bakeneko60. If you try to use a Bakeneko60 O-ring in the BakenekoGO there is a chance the assembly will not be seated properly.

Q: Why ZMK over QMK?
A: Put plainly, QMK lacks what we would consider functional open source BT and BLE support. On the flip side, ZMK is wireless first, superbly power efficient, and completely open source. With a GUI keymap editor coming soon, we are extremely excited to be backing the ZMK project and using it in our keyboards.

Awesome kit for the price.

It's surprisingly good for the price. I just lubed the included stabilizers, put Baby Racoon switches, and topped it off with Osume Keycaps. My only gripe would be that the RGB lighting should stay on when wired mode instead of turning off every time you stop using the board.

Incredible Value

I mainly purchased this kit to use the case as a home for another 60% o-ring mount PCB, but ended up building it as intended as I was still waiting for some parts to finish the PCB that was supposed to go in here. Even without any modifications outside of clipping and lubing the included stabs, the board sounds fantastic. With a makeshift silicone weight at the bottom of the case and some switch pads - this $80 kit sounds just as nice as some of the much more expensive PC builds in my collection. I can't see any manufacturing imperfections in the frosted PC, and with the RGB off it looks great with a light blue keycap set. I prefer a wired keyboard but did bring this along to work for a few days and tried it out over bluetooth. I haven't had any connection issues and haven't had to charge it in the two weeks I have had it.

I think that ZMK might be a turn off to some but I would say that the current solution for editing your keymap doesn't require a deep knowledge of how the firmware functions, and I am excited to see what ZMK Studio can do for people in the future.

This kit, especially with the bundle discount that is currently available, represents a fantastic value for money, and I would heartily recommend it as a purchase to anyone as either their first keyboard or their 50th.

We're thrilled to hear you're enjoying your BakenekoGO! ZMK Studio updates coming soon, stay tuned!!

Exceeded Expectations

A bunch of people asked in the CannonKeys' discord whether the case itself would be too light, or if the walls of the case would be too thin, and safe to say, I don't think either of those are an issue with the BakenekoGO.

At 645 grams fully built, it may not seem hefty, but when taking the case itself out of the box for the first time, I was surprised at how "thicc" the case was in general. Of course, it doesn't weigh as much as an alu Bakeneko60, but it's designed to be used wireless and as a portable option for when you don't want to take your Bakeneko60 or similar board with you.

As of writing this review, the ZMK studio project isn't fully released, so you'll have to follow CannonKeys' guide (written and/or video format) to remap using ZMK, but even for someone like me (who only uses VIA and VIAL and only dabbled with QMK a few times in the past), the steps and guides were super easy to follow.

And, just like the guides state, once you link your GitHub account and do a lot of things to set yourself up to be able to remap and flash the board, future remapping takes much less time and effort.

While I would've liked a 7u spacebar option with the stock wireless PCB at launch, it 100% was not a deal-breaker, and I'm sure if there's enough interest, a future wireless 7u PCB may be an option. Of course, you can use any other PCB and/or plate that fits a Bakeneko60 and use the board wired as well!

Since it ended up being my friend who received the BakenekoGO, we didn't necessarily play with a bunch of different switch, keycap, and plate configs, but she was happy with the end result, and that's all that matters. Can this board sound better than the DCX Garnet, KTT Roses, and POM full plate that we recorded the sound test with? Absolutely. But I definitely can't complain regarding the sound of that config! We kept the 50A durometer stock O-Ring that came with the board as well.

Overall, a great lil Bakeneko to use on the GO!

Nice build quality, could have a few improvements

Would like to see an physical on/off switch that doesn’t need me to take off a key to reach, and the oring mount making the board being easy to fall out of its case could damage cables, since its supposedly a portable board, maybe the case fit should be tighter (pressure outwards from the R1 keys will very effortlessly take the board out of the case, so are flipping the board upside down and shaking slightly)

We definitely understand that the switch placement may not be the most optimal. This was our first time designing a PCB like this and so we'll continue to iterate and improve the experience moving forward.

Good keyboard with minor downsides

Main and most controversive part is RGB and shinethrough aestetics. Cable management on PCB done bad. Direction and placement of connectors can be adjusted to better deal with wires. One of RGB leds has direct contact with battery which is not just bad, but can result in fire accidents. Diffferent persons who are working on case/pcb design must collaborate with each other to avoid such situations.
Second part is ZMK. It's good for battery lifetime, but keyboard release should be after UI release. I'm skilled enough to deal with ZMK and even write a custom firmware based on qmk/zmk, but I'm just lazy to build it for a brand new keyboard. So... it will wait it's time on a shelf till UI.
Third part is lack of tsangan support on default pcb. Yes, I can get a spare one with required layout, but then $80 board will become a $120 board which is not that nice.

Overall I'm satiafied with this board. It's a cheap way to get lightweight o-ring board.
