Prior to the launch of BakenekoGo, we explained why we chose ZMK and also promised that a graphical configuration tool called ZMK Studio would be available soon.

A few days ago, the ZMK team hit a huge milestone - and ZMK Studio is now available for beta testing!

With this beta release, we feel comfortable enough to share firmware that supports ZMK Studio for our power users. To be clear - this is still beta software, and there might be bugs. But if you’d like to try it out, find some bugs, and help the ZMK team make Studio better and ready for a full non-beta release - we want to make that easy for you.

We’ve created two versions of the BakenekoGo ZMK Studio-enabled firmware. One requires “unlocking” in ZMK Studio. This is done by using the control layer and hitting backspace.

Hold the layer 1 key, keeping that key held hold down right control, then finally tap the backspace key while the previous two keys are still being held down.

The other version does not require unlocking. While we recommend using the locking firmware for security reasons, this firmware does exist for ease of use. Also, If you accidentally remove the unlock keycode from your keymap, you can still use ZMK studio by flashing the firmware that does not require unlocking, remapping the unlock keycode, and flashing the locking firmware back.

And of course, if you’d like to remove studio support and go back to stock BakenekoGo firmware, we have that available as well.

For flashing instructions, please see our flashing guide.

The firmwares are available here:

Once flashed, simply plug your keyboard in via USB and head to https://zmk.studio/ to get started.

The basics of how to use ZMK Studio

Remember, this is beta software, and nothing is finalized yet! The UI might not be as polished as you want - but it can remap keys! One thing of note - to persist your keymap to the keyboard, you must hit the “save” button in the top right corner - and wait a bit of time for the keymap to save. Otherwise, you’ll leave the app and your changes will go away. This is a bit of a difference from other keymapping software that is out there.

If you encounter any bugs, please let us know as well as the ZMK team. For these issues, the best way of contact will be through Discord. Our discord is available here and the ZMK discord is available here.

Furthermore, we’ve created a new ZMK Module to contain all our ZMK powered keyboards moving forward - that repo is available here. The current config repo can still be used for the older style configurator - but new changes will only happen in this new ZMK module.

We’re really excited for the ZMK Studio beta, and hope you’ll join us in testing!
